In spring 2020 there was the first business lockdown to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus. A local business, Kawakubo Japanese Restaurant, had a one night fundraiser on their last night of operation before the temporary closure. Kawakubo’s owner, Shinji Kawakubo, announced that all sales would be donated to the Health Foundation to purchase equipment for Queen Victoria Hospital. It was an incredible success – they raised $9793 that evening! The Health Foundation, being informed of a possible grant for the Canadian Medical Association to small rural hospitals, made a successful application and were approved for the full requested amount of $52,446 to complete the purchase of the ventilator. We would like to extend our gratitude to the owners of Kawakubo Japanese Restaurant and the Canadian Medical Association for their generosity and support. The new ventilator arrived in early 2021 so now Queen Victoria Hospital has 2 portable ventilators available.
